IHOP Sketch

Have I mentioned yet how lazy an artist I am?

This morning, after cleaning a portion of my house yesterday, I went to hang out at my favorite IHOP.  While I was sitting there I did these face sketches of Our Hero.  I was just trying to get more familiar with his facial expression  I know that most cartoonist normally do like a spread sheet that just focus on drawing their character's face showing different emotions.  Well, I don't actually KNOW it, but I've seen it enough that I just assume it to be true.  LOL.

I however I'm more of a snapshot cartoonist.  Which means that I draw everything more on the spot.  This is because I am a lazy artist.  I don't normally want to take away the spontaneity of drawing.  Well, that's what I tell myself, but the reality is that I am just hella lazy.

What I am really trying to learn to do is show emotion on Our Hero's face when he doesn't have eyeballs or eyebrows.

The other problem I have as a artist is that I don't like to show movement in the face of my characters.  Does that make sense.  Let me explain.  You know how normally when you smile, frown, ect. that the face moves?  Well I don't like to do that.  I want the face to stay the same.  This is something I need to learn to get over.  I know, I know.  Anyway, I randomly drew these faces with a pen, while I was waiting for my food and talking to my waitress.

The picture above the faces is a sketch I did a little earlier this year.  You can see the difference in him and the original.  Isn't he cute.  I love the concept of Our Hero, but I think I made his chest to barreled, his waist too thin and his arms and legs too damn lanky.  Not to mention his broad ass shoulders.  All of these things make him a nightmare to draw, but I'm gonna make it work, because I love the idea of him.

  1. how is it possible to show emotion without the face moving? that is really going to be a challenge.

the face with him smiling is good though
